Quick answer

Tread depth, age and damage all matter. Here's how to tell when it's time for new tyres.
When should you replace your tyres?
Table of contents (4 sections)
  1. 1. Tread wear indicators
  2. 2. Age
  3. 3. Damage
  4. 4. Repeated punctures

Tyres don't come with a fixed expiry, but there are clear signs they need replacing.

1. Tread wear indicators

Small raised bars in the main grooves show when tread reaches 1.6 mm. If the tread is level with them, replace the tyre.

2. Age

Rubber hardens with age. Check the four-digit DOT code (e.g. 2321 = week 23 of 2021). Most makers advise replacing tyres after five to six years even if tread remains.

3. Damage

Bulges, deep cuts, cracks or exposed cords mean the tyre is unsafe.

4. Repeated punctures

Several repairs close together can weaken a tyre.
