Wet roads can more than double braking distances. Before the monsoon, run through this quick checklist.
- Tread depth: the legal minimum is 1.6 mm, but grip on wet roads drops well before that. Consider replacing below 3 mm.
- Pressure: check once a fortnight when tyres are cold. Under-inflated tyres aquaplane more easily.
- Sidewall damage: look for cuts and bulges from potholes.
- Alignment: uneven wear reduces the tread in contact with the road.
- Spare tyre: check its pressure and that the jack and tools are in the car.
